Visual Note-Taking: Technology to Combat Sexual Assault
Visual notetaking is a process of representing ideas non-linguistically. They can be used to process information and communicate it to others with images.
The idea is to take notes in real time (during meetings, conferences, or presentations) in a visual/sketchy way by letting go of details and focusing on the big ideas and takeaways.
This method forces you to be fully engaged with the presentation to decide what information is worth capturing and what isn’t.
There are no rules in sketchnote-taking, You can use typography, quotes, diagrams, or bullet lists .
First exercise before starting Ironhack UXUI Bootcamp is practicing a Visual notetaking through watching TED Talks at home or Meetups around my city!
I preferred practicing the visual notetaking of a TED talk from a bunch of video list given to us. This talk is represented by Jessica Ladd who is using technology to combat sexual assault, empower survivors and advance justice.
Ladd is talking about Callisto, a new platform for college students to confidentially report sexual assault with. Ladd is helping survivors get the support and justice they deserve while respecting their privacy concerns.
After listening, understanding and practicing several times for hours, I ended up with the last version of my visual note.
Take aways
As Ironhack prework notes stated “The first time won’t be the best one”
- Apart from getting to know Visual note-taking as a way of processing information and communicating, I personally realized once more how important practicing is. The reality is, the only way to learn something new is to practice. I was hesitating to restart drawing and concerned about finishing this exercise. However, I acknowledged the challenge, checked the samples, tried seeing the logic behind and common patterns. Practicing over and over, gave me the confidence to visual note this amazing story I listened from Jessica Ladd.
- What I did was not a real time Sketch Noting. After this exercise, I’m confident enough to attend meetings, conferences or presentations and proceed with visual note taking.
